Staines Band are 90 years old today!
Jul 19, 2020
This year marks two big anniversaries for the band: 90 years since we were founded and 30 years since the opening of the band room.
This year marks 90 years since Staines Brass Band formed on July 19th, 1930 and 30 years since the band officially opened their headquarters in the Lammas recreation ground on the 17th November 1990.
On opening their headquarters, which were joint funded by the local council, they also celebrated their Diamond Jubilee (60 years) by marching through Staines town centre and had the then Mayor of Spelthorne, Cllr. Huseini Jaffer and Harry Mortimer CBE officially open the Band Pavilion. Harry Mortimer CBE is a famous figure in the Brass Banding world; a virtuoso on Cornet and Trumpet, he is considered the father of the Brass Band movement. The events of the day were accompanied with a programme which the band still has a copy of.
1990 really was a big year for the band, who were also promoted to the Championship section earlier that January.
Since then, the band formed a second band to perform high quality concerts and engagements, which eventually took on the name of Staines Lammas Band. Both bands still rehearse in their own band room on different nights but suspended rehearsals back in March due to Covid-19 and have been following government guidance since.
The bands had hoped to be celebrating their 90th anniversary and 30th anniversary of the Band pavilion together in a joint concert but have had to suspend these plans for now. Instead it was decided to bring the bands back together another way.
The bands have historically had separate web presences, making it confusing for those seeking a band to play with and for those booking us, knowing where to go, or who they are booking. It has also meant that the bands have been separate and unconnected. Instead we wanted to reconnect the bands and their history by having one portal to see what the bands are up to, where they are performing, for celebrating their achievements and news and to contact the bands.
For the past few months during lockdown, we have had a team come together to build the bands’ first ever joint website at stainesbrassband.co.uk for this years celebration.
The bands hope that in the future we can mark the occasion with a mass get together, once we can also celebrate the reopening of entertainment and getting together after covid.
